Description
Here in Dayton WA, there is a small store, Steve's Grocery, that always manages to track down the best watermelons every summer. One day while purchasing some watermelons here, I thought, "This is a pretty cool aspect of small town America. I should paint this place," and so I did.
What amazed me was the reaction afterward in my hometown, when many people reached out to comment on the neighborhood grocery, and how it has impacted their lives. A number of people mentioned how they remember it in its first location, along the highway between Dayton and nearby Waitsburg, something I didn't know about at all.
Others commented on the friendliness of the place, how they ran down there on a regular basis to pick up ice cream or beer or . . . watermelons.
One of the things I've found most intriguing about Steve's grocery is the name, Steve. I don't know when, or if, there was an actual Steve, but for years it was owned by a man named Gale, and after that, to Gale's daughter (who has a name, I am sure, but I have just never, in my watermelon runs, asked. I probably should).
But what I like most about Steve's Market is that it is a small business in a small town, doing big things for the people in the neighborhood. And, really, isn't that what small business is all about?
