Drawing - Charcoal On Paper
Description
With an elegant sweep, the feather in a young woman's vintage hat embraces her face and frames an expression of contemplation and meditation.
The setting for this charcoal portrait is the Boldman House in Dayton, WA, a museum that is set up to look as the house did when the Boldman family lived in it during the 1920s. Gladys Boldman, the youngest daughter of the family who lived in the house from the early 1900s until the late 1990, when she passed away and bequeathed the home to the Dayton Historical Society, was a fashionable, chic woman who always wore the latest hats, shoes, and dresses.
The model in the portrait is wearing one of Gladys's many hats, and she is standing at the window of the dining room, which looks out into a period garden of flowers and herbs.
Fashion changes, perhaps because the industry drives it to do so, but people stay the same. The model captures Gladys's sense of contemplation, tempered a sense of fun, and brings the past into the present.
The original charcoal drawing of A Feather in Her Hat is matted and framed.
