Description
Locals shop, chat in the shade, and sell goods at a market in Santiago, a town on the shores of the volcanic Lake Aititlán in Guatemala. The people who live here are primarily Tz’tujil, a Mayan people group.
While many woman of Mayan descent throughout Guatemala continue to dress in traditional, woven garments, most the men have switched to modern western clothing. Santiago is different in this respect, as many men still wear the unique clothing styles of their lake-shore town.
There’s much talk today – generally from the top down to the bulk of us at the bottom – about being a “global community,” as if there were something positive about us all talking the same, dressing the same, eating the same, thinking the same, with “the same” being a reflection of the imaginary world that we see in U.S.-based movies and TV.
This works well if you want the world population to look like a group of Storm Troopers in a Star Wars movie, but it’s not a good thing for the real world: we need true and actual diversity, groups of people and cultures that are distinctly different from one another, because no one culture, no one way of thinking – especially the one marketed and exported by the U.S. through our movies and pseudo-news stations – has all the answers, nor is worthy of being followed and emulated to the exception of all alternatives.
I enjoyed my time in Santiago, working on my Spanish, eating foods different from what I eat at home, and, most especially, shopping in the open air markets. There is a life and activity, a friendliness and openness, to these markets, and while the one-stop grocery store that is a hallmark of U.S. culture is more “convenient,” it has nothing when it comes to the human interaction you experience in a market like this.
