Description
Storm clouds gather above a dry landscape which is about to see the first of the fall rains. Portrayed here is the drainage of the South Fork Touchet River, near the small town of Dayton in Southeast Washington.
The South Fork Touchet is not a long river; nearly its entire length is within the Blue Mountains (yes, I know, what a generic name, did they just run out of names? Couldn't be bothered to come up with something more original? “yeah, let’s just call these mountains the Blue Mountains, and then let’s move on and name that lake, maybe we’ll call it mirror lake, nobody has thought of that before right?”) Anyways, the rain that falls on this drainage has a short journey before this river feeds into the North Fork Touchet (I grew up, just upriver of the confluence of these two rivers). The region is full of sparse coniferous forest, goat herds are occasionally brought in to reduce brush and shrubs which make wildfire a challenge in the area.
This piece I created with charcoal, chalk, and conte, on brown cotton paper.
