Artist's Description
Many years ago, the little town of Dayton, WA, had not one train depot, but three.
According to the historical society representing the present and only remaining depot, Dayton was a bustling little town, and various train companies operated their own tracks and attendant depots for both industrial and passenger purposes. The historic depot in this artwork was built in 1881, and is the oldest extant passenger train depot in the state.
Originally, it was located miles away in a region called Rock Hill, but was moved – by one horse and one mule – to its present location sometime in the late 19th century. It was positioned across the street from an existing depot that now no longer exists, its building replaced by an agricultural co-op (which, interestingly, no longer exists either).
In the artwork, Dayton Train Depot, I portray the historical building as seen in the evening on a late winter day. One can easily imagine the crowds that gathered at this depot in the...
