This drawing juxtaposes a commonly promoted belief with historical data that contradicts the promoted belief.
The belief promoted is that vaccines played a pivotal role in bringing about the drastic reduction of deaths due to infectious disease which was such a common cause of death especially amongst children in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
For most the infectious diseases, vaccines came to late to have plausibly played anymore than a secondary role in causing the reduction in mortality.
I needed just one disease as the example for the drawing to avoid cluttering the composition; I chose measles simply because it's such an iconic childhood illness, and the vaccine came so late, that the point is particularly clear.
I am using this drawing as the cover for an essay series which is a deep dive into the conflict surrounding the undue credit given to vaccines.
