Description
Long evening shadows and sepia tones make for a quiet evening. The chickens I imagine are about ready to call it a day and return to their roost.
It’s an old farmhouse, captured in its early days shortly after it was built, and before later renovations changed its overall appearance. Because it is a relatively new homestead in this image, there are few trees, and those that are there, are young saplings, just thinking about growing into mature trees.
Standing alone in its landscape, the house is a refuge for those who live in it, a place to rest and relax after a long day of work. So are homes today, whether they are apartments in the city or farmhouses on land, but too often we forget that they are our places of refuge, our havens in which to rest, think, relax, be with family, rejuvenate – well, essentially live.
Too often in our day we walk through the door, and the first thing we do is turn on the TV. Not so in this home, at the time it was first built: TVs weren’t a “staple” utility, something people considered so important that they couldn’t live their lives without them. Rather, what they considered important are the same things that we can consider important if we take the time to change the way we’ve been taught to think: family is important. Creativity is important. Working for ourselves and making our lives, and those of our family members, better, is important.
Leave the noise behind. Walk past the chickens, slowly so that you don’t startle them, and head toward the front porch. Once you’re there, before you enter the house for the evening, turn around and look at the world around you, surrounding the house.
Take a deep breath, and then walk into the house and enjoy your evening.
