Description
I love geese. They always seem concerned, worried, suspicious, and self-important (which is appropriate; they are important).
Unlike humans who think that they’re important, geese are likable; their very attitude of getting in your face is endearing and engaging. What interests them is interesting, they feel, and it deserves being looked closely into. If that happens to be you, well, then they’ll get close.
In the artwork, Geese on a Winter Day, a gaggle of geese are marching – together, but not in lockstep, because geese are independent, not military minded –in a noisy and gabbling parade from one side of the yard to the other. Shortly afterwards, they turned 180 degrees and paraded back, just as noisily, to their starting point.
On the day I arranged the photo shoot with these geese (actually, I arranged the photo shoot with the owner of the geese, but I’m sure the birds had their own say in the matter; they seem perfectly comfortable with the idea that they are eminently worthy subjects for fine art), I was somewhat disappointed in the weather report: we had enjoyed many days of fair weather and blue skies, but on photo-shoot day, the skies turned grey, the wind picked up, and it was a day most foul.
But it wasn’t foul, for the fowl. As I immersed myself in the world of these geese, I decided that the weather climate shift was appropriate: fog and gloom, mud and messiness and geese . . . yes, this was a most excellent combination.
Back in the studio, I pulled out the palette knife for much of the painting – the bold, smearing strokes of the palette knife seemed especially appropriate for this work, and I am most pleased with the result.
Join me, in the farmyard on a winter’s day, and enjoy some time with the geese.
