Description
A Scottish theologian and author, George MacDonald – 1824 to 1905 – was a prolific writer. A contemporary of both Lewis Carroll, who considered him his mentor, and Mark Twain, who initially did not like him but eventually became his friend, MacDonald is considered a pioneer figure in the field of fantasy literature. C.S. Lewis has said that MacDonald was an influence in all of his works.
“The Princess and the Goblin” and “The Princess and Curdie” were among my favorite childhood books, ones that I have appreciated even more when re-reading them as an adult. Laden with moral insight and deep thoughts on life, these simple tales are, like all of MacDonald’s work, filled with layer upon layer of meaning. I also enjoy “Lilith” for its fascinating, surreal exploration of concepts concerning hell and redemption.
Speaking of hell and redemption, MacDonald – who initially planned to become a medical doctor but dropped his studies (some think for lack of funds) –is a controversial figure for his beliefs on Christianity, another reason why I like him so much. Already drawn to his writings, I explored them even further when I heard that – after completing his theological training at the Highbury College for the Congregational ministry and securing a position as minister at the Trinity Congregational Church in Arundel, West Sussex, England – MacDonald garnered the ire of his congregation (they cut his salary in half) for his sermons on Christ’s universal love and desire that all should be saved.
They didn’t like that message.
Eventually, MacDonald left the ministry circuit and began his writing career, and through both non-fiction work (Unspoken Sermons 1, 2, and 3) and fictional, he explored the depths of Christianity and offered a message of true hope, one far beyond the decidedly uninspiring promise of hellfire and damnation for 9/10 of the world that is so prevalent within church culture.
As an artist, I was drawn to MacDonald’s noble profile, his visionary expression, and that truly awesome, flowing beard.
