Description
Chickens, and the compost pile.
The two love one another. Or, more accurately, the chickens love the compost pile. Given free range to it, the compost pile quickly becomes not a pile, but rather, a mass of organic matter, scratched through and scattered throughout the landscape.
So I guess it would be more accurate to say that, while the chickens love the compost pile, the compost pile doesn’t necessarily love them.
I live on a small farm, and chickens are a part of my life. I care for them morning and night, making sure they get their mash, leftover milk from the goats that the household doesn’t use, and water. During the day, chickens entertain themselves by foraging for food – grass, seeds, bugs, a mouse if they can catch it – and that compost pile is a smorgasbord of daily delights that needs to be checked out, scratched through and worked over.
And while I know it’s far more efficient to keep the compost pile off separately, far away from the chickens, I just can’t do that to them – it brings so much to their day.
The artwork, Hen by the Compost Pile, captures some of that enjoyment in an oil painting. Having eaten her fill at the compost pile, a hen heads for the salad bar. The warm, chaotic, creepy crawly filled, compost pile provides a soft background for showcasing the remarkable, orderly, feathering and punk attitude of this hen. The other chickens aren’t about: she is accompanied only by her shadow, she does not care. This chicken does her own thing.
It may be that the other chickens are so busy elsewhere that they haven’t noticed there is something new to see at the farm salad bar. But be assured, that once they do, this hen will no longer enjoy her meal in solitary splendor.
Take some time and watch the chickens today. And if you’re not fortunate to own some of these wonderful birds, enjoy some time with the artwork, Hen by the Compost Pile.
