Artist's Description
At the right time of day (early evening), in the spring and in the fall, a shadow is cast across these hills that resembles to a striking degree, the profile of a man. On the opposite side of the hill, the shadow looks as though it could be the feathers of a classic Native American war bonnet, consequently the hill is known to locals of the area as "Indian Hill". This scene is from the foothills of the Blue Mountains in South-East Washington State. The valley beneath the hillside is that of the Northfork Touchet River. The orchard occupying the foreground is an apple and pear orchard, which lies just a couple miles up river of the small town of Dayton, WA, were I grew up. This shadow's presence is especially evocative as the Nez Perce people used to frequent this area. This monochrome work I executed with three pigments; Red Iron Oxide, Titanium White, and Ivory Black.
