Description
With a no-nonsense stare – or should I say glare? – a Texas Longhorn Cow directs its gaze on the viewer.
So often when we encounter cows in the country, and they stop what they’re doing to notice us, they seem to be watching us, analyzing us, wondering what we’re up to. Their contemplative stance toward new things (like pesky artists darting about their landscape, obtaining reference photos) gives them an almost wise or sagacious presence.
And who is to say that there is no wisdom behind those eyes? Because cows can’t talk, they don’t say foolish things, don’t talk behind others’ backs, don’t talk politics. They stare, look, take in their surroundings, chew things over – often quite literally.
I know. Perhaps that is too much to attribute to the intellectual ability of a cow, but because we tend to go so much in the opposite direction, attributing no ability at all to think to the cow, perhaps it’s not such a bad thing to fly into a moment of fancy.
When I painted this artwork, Longhorn Cow, I wanted to take the viewer out into the country with me, to the field just outside Kennewick, WA, where there was a small ranch with Texas Longhorn Cows, and expose them to the sensation of being stared at by the cow, analyzed by it. For that reason, I kept this composition bold, open, and painted with a large brush. Because I wanted the cow to be the central focus, I kept the background brushy, intangible, abstract. We know that the cow is standing on grass; behind her is a clump of bushes; and in the very background is the sky, but the lack of sharp detail in the cow’s surroundings keeps our focus as strongly on the cow as her focus is strongly on us.
