Description
Clouds break moonlight into shafts of light that only show up when the light crosses the thin layer of wildfire smoke below the clouds. The moonbeams constantly shifted as the cloud forms changed, resulting in a mesmerizing light show. The spectacular moonlit scene left me with strong memories for later describing this evening in paint on canvas.
Summer in the Pacific Northwest of the USA, while it often features clear skies with starlight glowing above, also has its moments and times of occlusion because of annual wildfires. They could be as close as within the same county; or they could be miles away, up north in Canada, but when the air is still and unmoving, the smoke settles into the atmosphere and becomes part of both the day and night sky.
And as an aside, wildfires are nothing new. For years I worked as a wildland firefighter, and some years were busy, and some years were not. If the spring was especially wet, the lush growth of spring, dried out come summer, made good fodder for fires.
And if the spring wasn’t wet, we headed into the summer wildfire season with a dry climate, with a landscape ready like tinder. Thunderstorms in early and mid-summer, with their lightning show, frequently resulted in random fire strikes from the lightning – these fires could be put out quickly, or they could grow – it’s just the way things are.
The news has a way of making hot summers, dry months, and wildfires seem like they are something new, unusual, unique to the last ten years and something to freak out about. But then, with the news, there is always something to freak out about.
But with nature, there is always something to observe, wonder about, be still, and in a state of awe – as when moonbeams break through the clouds.
