Here I’ll discuss some interesting art specific matters. Firstly, people I have shown this painting to in person usually contemplate it for a moment before a smile crosses their face and they find this artwork, among other things, humorous. But a small number of people have looked at it a while with a perplexed look on their face and then turned to me like “What in the world?” and I have had to draw their attention to the shadow upon the wall - it’s a Coronavirus monster. So if you are in the minority that didn’t get that, don’t worry, you are not alone, and all the viewers including the perplexed minority were intelligent people.

This brings up an interesting consideration; there is a balance to be struck in this type of artwork between hiding the meaning just enough that the viewer has to do a double take and then receive satisfaction from successfully “getting it” or at least beginning to get it, while at the same time ensuring that most viewers actually do eventually “get it.” Based upon reactions so far, I think that I here struck this balance pretty well.

The other balancing act of great importance in many types of painting but especially in this sort, is communicating clearly enough that the artist definitely conveys some of their own insight, while leaving room for the viewer to draw insights from the artwork that can potentially be beyond the scope of the artist’s own insight. A combination of clarity and ambiguity, or we could say finished structure produced by the artist’s imagination while leaving some raw material for the viewer to build with through their own imagination and intuition.
