Zion National Park is the setting of this painting. My father and I were initially dismayed at the number of people within the principal valley of Zion National Park, what was this? Disney Land? We went ahead and began our hike, we placed our faith on the principle that you go far enough and you will get away from the crowds. And sure enough, after we hiked past the turn off that leads to Angel’s Landing and continued towards the valley depicted here, the crowds all but disappeared (over the next 5 or 6 miles we encountered only one other person). Peace, quiet, and fantastical, massive rock formations ruled the rest of that day. This valley is itself far above the floor of the Zion canyon, but as you can see rocks rise further still to a high plateau. Outside the view of this image a trail cut into sheer rock, and wide enough for a mule train, gives access to these plateaus.
