Description
What fascinated me most about Virginia Woolf was the expression on her face.
Now I’ll admit right from the start that I have never read any of Woolf’s novels. According to Wikipedia – not my favorite source of valid information, especially anything to do with controversial topics, but useful now and then – Woolf was considered a pioneer in the use of stream of consciousness as a narrative device.
As a person who prefers non-fiction written clearly, concisely, and well, stream of consciousness doesn’t really make me reach for the bookshelf for one of Woolf’s classics, which include Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and Orlando.
But as an artist, what drew me to this early 20th century, English author was not her writing but, as I said at the beginning her face. The slight smile on her mouth invites the viewer to stop and look, to consider coming closer and introducing oneself, to talk with this person and see what she has to say.
It is an intelligent face, a bit mischievous, hiding thoughts deep within. One feels that a conversation with this person would be a witty one, a trading of observations and mental barbs, and that you would have to be on your feet indeed to not get verbally knocked off your feet.
The eyes, also, are expressive – her brows are lifted, alert, engaged. As a writer, she would be aware of her surroundings, because those surroundings – the places, the people, the events – are integral to the creation of a story. Writers, like artists, do not make up things completely out of their heads, but draw upon what we see, what we experience, what we live to create what we do.
I may, someday, look up a book of Woolf’s and give it a try. For now, I have enjoyed drawing her portrait in charcoal, and interacting with her wit and intelligence in that way.
