Escaped slave, esteemed intellectual, social reformer, writer, statesman and famous abolitionist: Frederick Douglass (1817-1895) earned many appellations in a time and place when and where nothing more than a person’s skin color defined their level of importance and dignity.
Born into slavery in Maryland in 1817 or 1818 (Douglass himself was never sure of his birth date), Douglass escaped and eventually became a leader in the nationalist abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York.
Many people, even those in the supposed liberal-thinking North, were surprised that a former slave could express himself so well, could carry himself with such dignity, could make and pursue arguments that made sense.
Like any person who goes against the status quo and the belief of the times (which – back then as it is now – is generally created, nurtured, and enforced by the privileged, ruling class) Douglass and his words would not necessarily find welcome among the the...
