Description
Wind is one of those things you can’t see that is real.
Anyone who bicycles knows what it feels like to resist a headwind, and even when we’re driving, especially in a small car, the wind makes its impact known.
So it is when we’re walking, as the painterly artwork, Into the Wind, portrays.
We are out in the country, in a meadow nearby a farm or ranch, and a strong, patient horse puts its head down to face head on the gusts of the day. By the abstract sweep of clouds in the background, the swaying, leafless bushes in the middle, and the brush of grass in the foreground, we see that it is a blustery wind, blowing relentlessly into the horse’s face. You can almost hear it moaning through the branches of the bushes, imagine it swirling and changing directions, never staying the same.
And yet patiently, determinedly, the horse plods forward.
Some days feel like that, you know. We have things to do, places to go, projects to accomplish, goals to work toward, and it seems as if strong forces resist our efforts, blow into our face, push at us and taunt us, tempt us to turn back and head so that the wind is at our back.
But backwards is not the direction that we, or the horse in the painting, want to go. And so it becomes a matter of putting our head forward and taking that one step, so often it seems a plodding step, forward, one at a time so that we can get where we go.
At the same time, it’s good to remember that the wind isn’t necessarily bad, an enemy that keeps us from the grass ahead. An integral part of weather, wind and resistance is an integral part to life as well.
