This rock formation of dark stone struck me as otherworldly and mysterious, something worthy of contemplation. When I decided to explore this formation in a painting, I chose to paint out several indicators of where this is – I wanted to leave much of the scene to the viewers imagination, including where it is, so that if the viewer departs on a flight of fancy they are not bound to go to the specific geographic location where I saw this.

I always find it intriguing what worlds a painting can suggest beyond the borders of the canvas. Here for example, the wall of rock blocks your view of all the background, but does that in fact give you more room as the view over the wall is now limited only by your imagination rather than my brushstrokes?

What would you see from inside the painting looking the other way? Often times there are clues in a painting as to what lies beyond the canvas’s edges. A shadow for example, or in this case the reflected light on the dark rock. <...
