Description
Dramatic clouds and silhouettes usher in sunset on the Colombian llanos, or plains. It is an area of vast grasslands and tropical forests, one in which the days are sultry, warm, humid. The coolness of evening is a welcome arrival.
Casanare is a department, or state, of Colombia in South America, located in the southern section of the Colombian part of the Andes Mountains. Known for its rich grasslands, it is a place of many cattle ranches. I stayed here on one of my trips to South America, in my quest to learn and improve my Spanish. The family with whom I stayed was gracious and friendly, patiently listening to me as I sought to converse, and gently correcting all my many mistakes (actually, they probably couldn’t have corrected ALL my mistakes, or the conversation wouldn’t have progressed at all).
The sunsets were amazing. I recognize that sunsets, by their very nature, are amazing, but so often they are blocked by buildings, or smog, or even large mountains that, by dominating the landscape, usher in the evening while it is still afternoon.
None of these issues are in place at Casanare. The landscape is wide, bold, sweeping, and there is as much sky to view as there are trees and rivers and plains. When I drew the artwork, Sunset in Casanare, I chose a lightly pink paper upon which to make the black brush strokes of charcoal, because I wanted to capture that sense of magical evanescence, that fleeting glow that reflects off the clouds above and water below.
Subtly, almost quietly, the light of day transcends into the shadows of evening. As you are standing there, looking from sky to land and land to sky, you simply want to absorb the feeling of peace, tranquility, and silence. It is a most excellent way to end the day.
