Artist's Description
You don’t think about how exceptionally large moose are until you see one in person.
My own recent experience involved sighting a cow moose lurking around the pond near where I live. I was out for an evening walk when I saw a movement in the branches, heard the rustling, then glimpsed the animal.
“What on earth is THAT?” I asked myself. “That’s no deer, and not an elk.” It took a moment for my brain to fully register that what I was seeing was a moose, because while we have an abundance of deer in the area, and even an occasional glimpse of elk, a moose is still very much a rarity.
She was shy, and rapidly disappeared in the underbrush. But that glimpse was enough to make my evening.
My charcoal drawing, Moose, depicts an even larger, grander, more imposing animal that a cow moose, the bull moose, its head crowned with the distinctive antlers. And while I haven’t seen one of those around the pond lately, the glimpse of the female version inspir...
