Description
You don’t think about how exceptionally large moose are until you see one in person.
My own recent experience involved sighting a cow moose lurking around the pond near where I live. I was out for an evening walk when I saw a movement in the branches, heard the rustling, then glimpsed the animal.
“What on earth is THAT?” I asked myself. “That’s no deer, and not an elk.” It took a moment for my brain to fully register that what I was seeing was a moose, because while we have an abundance of deer in the area, and even an occasional glimpse of elk, a moose is still very much a rarity.
She was shy, and rapidly disappeared in the underbrush. But that glimpse was enough to make my evening.
My charcoal drawing, Moose, depicts an even larger, grander, more imposing animal that a cow moose, the bull moose, its head crowned with the distinctive antlers. And while I haven’t seen one of those around the pond lately, the glimpse of the female version inspires me to think that the other gender may wander around some evening. Perhaps if she’s there enough, he’ll be interested enough to join her. One can always hope.
This particular drawing is done in charcoal, a favorite medium of mine for playing with contrast, light and dark, light and shadow. I created the work as one of a series of illustrations for Much Ado About Corona, the dystopian love novel by Canadian author John C. A. Manley. I also did the cover art, on this site as well, entitled, Much Ado About Corona, the same as the novel.
Enjoy a moment with the moose. Because he is walking across paper, you don’t have to worry that he’ll spook upon hearing you or smelling you, and unlike the cow moose at the pond, he won’t disappear from sight.
