Description
With steps leading up to it all the way around, Carmen Cathedral in Pamplona, Colombia, South America, is set back amidst the narrow streets of the old town. What initially caught my attention was its white steeple, rising above the neighboring buildings.
I walked through the narrow streets of the high mountain town, always keeping the steeple in sight, until I arrived at the church. For awhile I simply looked at it, poised atop its pedestal. And then I walked around it. And then I climbed the stairs to it and entered.
The lines of the building are clean and simple yet elegant. There is a sense of quietude, of silence and contemplation that, to me, is what a church building should be. This is a place to think, pray, contemplate and meditate.
Later that week I returned to Carmen Cathedral with my sketchpad and charcoals. I found a comfortable spot within sight of the church and spent a most pleasant afternoon drawing the iglesia. What added to the pleasantness were friendly passers-by who would stop and look over my shoulder, commenting on the progress of the piece. It was an excellent opportunity for me to practice my Spanish, and I was, as I always am, grateful to kindly strangers who patiently waited for me to answer their questions in my halting Spanish, then – when they did correct me – to do so generously and sensitively.
I invite you as the viewer to stop with me just outside Carmen Cathedral and enjoy the friendly bustle of people walking by, while at the same time you let your eyes wander over the architectural elements of the building. Later, we can slowly stroll the perimeter below the steps before climbing the stairs to the church itself. Enjoy the sense of quiet and of peace.
