Description
The courthouse in Dayton Washington, Columbia County, is the oldest working courthouse in Washington state. The building was completed in 1887, though later it was modernized with many of the original architectural details removed (including the statues, and cupola). Later, fortunately, it was restored to it's original historic design as portrayed in this image. Columbia County’s Courthouse has since become an icon of the town of Dayton.
I decided to focus the composition of this drawing on the upper section of the courthouse both to bring into greater detail the most interesting architectural elements, and to lift the viewer up above the ground, away from the stressful activities that take place within courthouses. Here, with the sky alone for the background, and plenty of fresh air, one can just about forget the daily traffic and busyness below. This drawing, I rendered with charcoal on paper.
