Description
For many people, their only experience with handcuffs comes from what they see on TV and movies.
And because the message of TV and movies is that government law enforcement – whether it is through the military or the police, the CIA or the FBI, Homeland Security or NSA, or any other agency with a misleading name or a series of three capital letters – is good, always good, always upright and honorable, fighting for the American Way, then any time we see someone in handcuffs in real life, we will automatically come to the judgment of, “There is a BAD person. That person has been arrested. They are evil and wrong and need to be put away.”
But real life, in probably most every way, has nothing to do with TV and movies. And so, when we see someone in handcuffs, hear that someone has been arrested, it might be best to withhold judgment (always a wise policy, incidentally) and question things:
What happened? Why was this person detained? Is the reason given valid? (As an aside, if our only source of information is the mainstream news, it is best to start out with a healthy sense of doubt about anything we are told about the situation. Indeed, if we must judge, then the media has earned our heavy and cynical judgment. Perhaps we should give it more often.)
The drawing, Arrest, is one of a series of illustrations I did for John Manley’s dystopian novel, Much Ado about Corona. (Additional images for this book include Beaver, Moose, Dandelion, Maple Leaf, and Turtle.) With minimal strokes of charcoal, I wanted to capture the sense of bleakness, harshness, imposition of the shackling of a human being.
Yes, there are criminals, and society needs protection from them. But the question is, just who, really, are the criminals that we need protection from? They may be far different characters than the ones movies and TV portray.
